Am I Eligible for Weight Loss Injections?
Weight loss injections are generally suitable for adults with a BMI of 30 or above, or a BMI of 27-30 alongside a weight-related health condition such as high blood pressure, sleep apnoea or prediabetes. They are not suitable for everyone — our pharmacist will screen for factors such as a history of eating disorders, pancreatitis, or Type 1 diabetes, which would exclude you from treatment. Some patients managing Type 2 diabetes with metformin alone may still be eligible; this is assessed individually.
BMI Assessment and What Happens at Your Consultation
Your first appointment includes a BMI calculation, waist measurement, blood pressure check and a review of your current medicines and health conditions. Based on this assessment, our pharmacist will agree a personalised plan with you, starting at a low dose that increases gradually, with realistic goals for steady, sustainable weight loss rather than rapid change.
Side Effects and Ongoing Monitoring
The most common side effects of weight loss injections are gastrointestinal — nausea, diarrhoea or constipation — particularly when starting or increasing your dose, and these often settle over time. Prolonged symptoms can risk dehydration, and patients on certain diabetes medicines (such as sulphonylureas or insulin) need extra monitoring for low blood sugar. Your pharmacist will schedule regular check-ins throughout your treatment to review your progress and how you’re tolerating your dose.
