What Is MMR?

MMR is a combined vaccine that protects against measles, mumps, and rubella — three highly contagious viral infections spread through coughing and sneezing. Measles in particular can cause serious complications including pneumonia and encephalitis, and remains common in many parts of the world where vaccination coverage is lower than in the UK.

Global measles outbreaks have increased in recent years, including in parts of Europe, Asia, and Africa, making pre-travel protection more important than ever for anyone who isn’t fully vaccinated.

Do I Need the MMR Vaccine?

MMR vaccination is recommended if you:

• Were born between 1970 and 1990, when uptake of the second MMR dose was lower and you may not be fully protected
• Are unsure of your vaccination history or never completed the two-dose childhood course
• Are travelling to a region with an active measles, mumps, or rubella outbreak
• Work in healthcare, childcare, or education settings and want to confirm your immunity before travel

When Should I Get Vaccinated?

Ideally at least 6 weeks before departure — the two doses need a minimum 4-week gap between them, and your second dose should be completed at least 2 weeks before you travel. If your trip is sooner, a dose given closer to travel can still offer useful protection — speak to our pharmacist for advice on your specific timeline.

How Many Doses Do I Need?

Two doses provide lifelong protection for most people. If you have already had two documented doses in the past, you are considered fully protected and won’t need a further dose. If your history is incomplete or unclear, we can advise on catching up.

Combining MMR with Other Live Vaccines

MMR is a live vaccine, so if you also need another live vaccine — such as Yellow Fever or Chickenpox — these should either be given on the same day as your MMR, or spaced at least 4 weeks apart. The same 4-week spacing applies around a TB (tuberculosis) skin test. Let our pharmacist know about any other vaccines or tests you have planned so we can schedule your appointments correctly.

Side Effects of the MMR Vaccine

MMR is generally well tolerated in adults. Mild soreness at the injection site, a slight rash, or a short-lived low-grade fever can occur in the days following vaccination. Serious reactions are rare. MMR is a live vaccine and is not recommended during pregnancy — let our pharmacist know if this applies to you.
