What Is Cholera?
Cholera is an acute bacterial infection of the intestine caused by Vibrio cholerae, typically acquired through drinking or eating contaminated water or food. It causes profuse watery diarrhoea and vomiting that can rapidly lead to severe dehydration — potentially fatal within hours if untreated. Cholera outbreaks are most common in areas with inadequate water treatment and sanitation infrastructure, including parts of sub-Saharan Africa, South Asia, Haiti, and conflict zones.
Travellers to areas with active outbreaks or poor sanitation are at elevated risk, particularly those who venture beyond standard tourist infrastructure and into rural or refugee-camp settings.
Do I Need the Cholera Vaccine?
The cholera vaccine (Dukoral) is not routinely recommended for most package holidaymakers, but it is strongly advised for specific groups:

When Should I Get Vaccinated?
Ideally, complete the full 2-dose course at least 1 week before your departure. The two doses must be taken 1–6 weeks apart, so early booking is essential. If you are leaving very soon, please call us as we may be able to advise on alternative timings.
How Many Doses Do I Need?
Dukoral is given as 2 oral doses taken 1–6 weeks apart. Each dose is dissolved in water and consumed as a drink. Adults who have previously been vaccinated and are travelling again within 2 years may only require a single booster dose, rather than repeating the full course.
Side Effects of the Cholera Vaccine
Dukoral is generally very well tolerated. Some people experience mild, short-lived gastrointestinal effects such as nausea, stomach discomfort, or loose stools. These are temporary and not a sign that anything has gone wrong. Serious adverse reactions are rare. There are no restrictions on diet or activity after taking the vaccine.
