Hepatitis B is a viral infection affecting the liver, transmitted through blood and bodily fluids — including unprotected sex, needlestick injuries, tattooing, and sharing needles. It can lead to chronic liver disease, cirrhosis, and liver cancer if untreated.
Do I Need the Hepatitis B Vaccine?
Hepatitis B vaccine is recommended for travellers who may be exposed through medical or dental treatment abroad, unprotected sex, tattooing or piercing, or adventure activities in high-prevalence areas — particularly important for longer stays and those working in healthcare settings overseas.
When Should I Get Vaccinated Before Travel?
The standard 3-dose course takes 6 months to complete, though an accelerated schedule can be finished in 21 days if time is short — contact us to discuss the best schedule for your travel timeline.
How Many Doses Do I Need?
The standard Hepatitis B course is 3 doses at 0, 1, and 6 months. An accelerated schedule gives doses at days 0, 7, and 21, with a booster at 12 months for those on the accelerated schedule. Once you’ve completed the standard course, you typically won’t need a further booster for around 5 years — sooner if you’re later exposed to the virus. If you also need Hepatitis A protection, a combined Hepatitis A & B vaccine (Twinrix) is available, reducing the number of injections needed — ask our pharmacist at your consultation.
Side Effects of the Hepatitis B Vaccine
The vaccine is very well tolerated. Common side effects include mild soreness or redness at the injection site, a slight headache, and tiredness — typically passing within 48 hours. Serious allergic reactions are very rare.
