What Is Sinusitis?

Sinusitis is inflammation of the sinuses — the air-filled spaces behind your nose, cheeks and forehead — usually following a cold or viral infection. It causes a blocked or runny nose, facial pain or pressure (especially when bending forward), and sometimes a reduced sense of smell. Most cases clear up on their own within a couple of weeks, but some benefit from pharmacist treatment.

Am I Eligible for NHS Pharmacy First Treatment?

The NHS Pharmacy First sinusitis pathway is available to patients aged 12 and over whose symptoms have lasted more than 10 days, or who are getting worse after initially improving. Our pharmacist will check your symptoms against the NHS clinical criteria at the start of your consultation to confirm you’re suitable for the service.

What Happens at My Consultation?

Our pharmacist will ask about your symptoms, how long you’ve had them, and check for any signs that need referring on to a GP. Most consultations take around 10–15 minutes and can be done on a walk-in basis or by appointment.

What Treatment Might I Be Offered?

Depending on your symptoms, our pharmacist may recommend self-care advice, a nasal spray, or — where clinically appropriate — a short course of antibiotics issued directly under the Pharmacy First patient group direction, without needing a separate GP prescription.

When Should I See a GP Instead?

If you have severe symptoms, a high fever, swelling around the eyes, or symptoms that don’t improve or keep coming back, our pharmacist will refer you on to your GP or another appropriate service for further assessment.

What our patients say

Trusted by the Chiswick community

“I’ve been using Alisha pharmacy for 20 years now. I have other pharmacies nearer to my home, but I always use Alisha because Raj and all the rest of the team there are so friendly, professional, knowledgeable, informative and helpful. They obviously really care about what they do. A local gem.”

— P Hall, Google Review

“Raj the pharmacist runs a service of excellence and care to his local community. He and his team go above and beyond and know their community. The standard has always been exemplary. Would be such a tragedy to lose all of this to something impersonal and generic.”

— Harika Basharan, Google Review
