How Do I Know if a Bite Is Infected?
Insect bites and stings often cause mild swelling, redness and itching that settle within a few days. Signs the area has become infected include increasing redness spreading outward from the bite, warmth, swelling, pain, or discharge — sometimes with a mild fever.
Am I Eligible for NHS Pharmacy First Treatment?
The infected insect bite pathway is available to patients aged 1 and over. Our pharmacist will assess the site and check you don’t have any signs of a more serious infection needing urgent medical care.
What Happens at My Consultation?
Our pharmacist will examine the affected area, ask how and when it happened, and check for signs of spreading infection or an allergic reaction. This usually takes just a few minutes.
What Treatment Might I Be Offered?
Depending on severity, our pharmacist may recommend antihistamines or hydrocortisone cream for itching, or — where the bite is clinically infected — a short course of antibiotics issued directly under Pharmacy First.
When Should I Seek Urgent Help?
If you develop facial or throat swelling, difficulty breathing, a widespread rash, or feel generally very unwell, seek emergency medical attention immediately rather than waiting for a pharmacy consultation.
