What Is Hepatitis A?
Hepatitis A is a viral infection that causes inflammation of the liver. It is spread through contaminated food and water, making it a significant risk for travellers to parts of Asia, Africa, South America, and Eastern Europe. Symptoms include jaundice, nausea, abdominal pain, and fatigue, and the illness can last several weeks.
Do I Need the Hepatitis A Vaccine?
Hepatitis A vaccine is recommended for most international travellers, particularly those visiting high-risk areas where sanitation and food hygiene standards may be lower than in the UK. Even travellers staying in hotels or tourist resorts are at some risk, as the virus can be present in food and water supplies.
When Should I Get Vaccinated Before Travel?
We recommend having the vaccine at least 2 weeks before you travel, ideally as part of a wider travel health review 4–6 weeks before departure.
How Many Doses Do I Need?
A single dose of the Hepatitis A vaccine provides protection for approximately 1 year. For long-term protection (up to 20+ years), a booster dose is given 6–12 months after the initial dose. If you also need Hepatitis B protection, a combined Hepatitis A & B vaccine (Twinrix) is available, reducing the number of injections needed — ask our pharmacist at your consultation.
Side Effects of the Hepatitis A Vaccine
The vaccine is very well tolerated. Common side effects include mild soreness or redness at the injection site, a slight headache, and tiredness — typically passing within 48 hours. Serious allergic reactions are very rare.
