What Causes a Sore Throat?

Most sore throats are caused by viral infections such as colds or flu, though some are bacterial (streptococcal) infections. Symptoms include pain or scratchiness in the throat, difficulty swallowing, and sometimes swollen glands in the neck. Most cases resolve within a week without needing antibiotics.

Am I Eligible for NHS Pharmacy First Treatment?

The sore throat pathway is available to patients aged 5 and over. Our pharmacist will use a scoring tool (checking things like fever, swollen glands and how your tonsils look) to assess whether antibiotics are likely to help, in line with NHS clinical guidance.

What Happens at My Consultation?

Our pharmacist will examine your throat, ask about your symptoms and how long you’ve had them, and check for any red-flag symptoms that need referring elsewhere. The assessment usually takes around 10 minutes.

What Treatment Might I Be Offered?

Many sore throats are best managed with pain relief, throat lozenges and fluids rather than antibiotics. Where your assessment score indicates a bacterial infection is likely, our pharmacist can issue a short course of antibiotics directly, without a separate GP prescription.

When Should I See a GP Instead?

If you have difficulty breathing or swallowing, drooling, a one-sided swelling in the throat, or symptoms that are severe or worsening, our pharmacist will refer you for urgent medical assessment.

What our patients say

Trusted by the Chiswick community

“I’ve been using Alisha pharmacy for 20 years now. I have other pharmacies nearer to my home, but I always use Alisha because Raj and all the rest of the team there are so friendly, professional, knowledgeable, informative and helpful. They obviously really care about what they do. A local gem.”

— P Hall, Google Review

“Raj the pharmacist runs a service of excellence and care to his local community. He and his team go above and beyond and know their community. The standard has always been exemplary. Would be such a tragedy to lose all of this to something impersonal and generic.”

— Harika Basharan, Google Review
