What Is Tetanus?

Tetanus is caused by bacteria found in soil and dust, which can enter the body through cuts or wounds and cause severe muscle stiffness and spasms. It is not spread from person to person, but can be fatal without prompt treatment.

Do I Need the Tetanus Vaccine?

A booster is recommended for travellers heading to remote areas with limited access to medical care, or anyone whose last vaccination was more than 10 years ago.

Please note: we are only able to offer tetanus vaccination for travel or occupational health reasons. If you have a contaminated wound and need urgent post-exposure treatment, please contact NHS 111 or attend A&E.

When Should I Get Vaccinated?

Ideally at least 2 weeks before you travel.

How Many Doses Do I Need?

A single booster dose is usually enough if you have completed a primary course before. If not, a fuller course may be needed — we will advise after reviewing your history.

Side Effects of the Tetanus Vaccine

Mild soreness at the injection site or feeling generally unwell are the most common side effects.

What our patients say

Trusted by the Chiswick community

“I’ve been using Alisha pharmacy for 20 years now. I have other pharmacies nearer to my home, but I always use Alisha because Raj and all the rest of the team there are so friendly, professional, knowledgeable, informative and helpful. They obviously really care about what they do. A local gem.”

— P Hall, Google Review

“Raj the pharmacist runs a service of excellence and care to his local community. He and his team go above and beyond and know their community. The standard has always been exemplary. Would be such a tragedy to lose all of this to something impersonal and generic.”

— Harika Basharan, Google Review
