What Is Impetigo?
Impetigo is a highly contagious bacterial skin infection that causes sores or blisters, often around the nose and mouth, which burst and form a golden-brown crust. It spreads easily through close contact and shared items like towels, and is particularly common in young children.
Am I Eligible for NHS Pharmacy First Treatment?
This pathway is available to patients aged 1 and over with localised, non-bullous impetigo. Our pharmacist will check your skin and confirm you’re suitable before treating you under the service.
What Happens at My Consultation?
Our pharmacist will examine the affected skin, ask how long you’ve had it and whether it’s spreading, and check there are no signs that need referring on for further assessment.
What Treatment Might Be Offered?
Localised impetigo is often treated with an antiseptic cream, or — where appropriate — a topical or oral antibiotic issued directly by our pharmacist under Pharmacy First.
How Do I Stop It Spreading?
Avoid sharing towels, flannels or bedding, wash affected areas gently and pat dry with a clean towel, and keep children off school or nursery until sores have crusted over or 48 hours after starting antibiotics, whichever is sooner.

What our patients say
Trusted by the Chiswick community
“I’ve been using Alisha pharmacy for 20 years now. I have other pharmacies nearer to my home, but I always use Alisha because Raj and all the rest of the team there are so friendly, professional, knowledgeable, informative and helpful. They obviously really care about what they do. A local gem.”
— P Hall, Google Review
“Raj the pharmacist runs a service of excellence and care to his local community. He and his team go above and beyond and know their community. The standard has always been exemplary. Would be such a tragedy to lose all of this to something impersonal and generic.”
— Harika Basharan, Google Review
