What Is Emergency Contraception?

Emergency contraception, sometimes called the morning-after pill, reduces the risk of pregnancy after unprotected sex or contraceptive failure. It works best the sooner it’s taken, and different options are effective for different lengths of time afterwards.

Am I Eligible for the Free NHS Service?

This free NHS service is generally available to women and girls aged 16 and over. Under-16s can also be seen in confidence — our pharmacist will carry out a Fraser guidelines assessment to check it’s appropriate, and will always act in your best interests and safety.

What Happens at My Consultation?

You’ll have a short, private and non-judgemental consultation with our pharmacist to check which option is suitable for you, based on when unprotected sex took place and your medical history.

How Soon Do I Need to Take It?

Emergency contraception is most effective the sooner it’s taken after unprotected sex — ideally within a few hours, though some options remain effective for up to 5 days. Please don’t delay coming in.

What About Ongoing Contraception?

Emergency contraception is for one-off use, not regular protection. Our pharmacist can talk you through ongoing contraception options, including our NHS oral contraception service, if you’d like.

What our patients say

Trusted by the Chiswick community

“I’ve been using Alisha pharmacy for 20 years now. I have other pharmacies nearer to my home, but I always use Alisha because Raj and all the rest of the team there are so friendly, professional, knowledgeable, informative and helpful. They obviously really care about what they do. A local gem.”

— P Hall, Google Review

“Raj the pharmacist runs a service of excellence and care to his local community. He and his team go above and beyond and know their community. The standard has always been exemplary. Would be such a tragedy to lose all of this to something impersonal and generic.”

— Harika Basharan, Google Review
