What Is Rabies?

Rabies is a viral disease of the central nervous system that is almost always fatal once symptoms develop. It is transmitted through the saliva of infected animals — most commonly through bites or scratches from dogs, bats, monkeys, and other mammals. Rabies exists on every continent except Antarctica, and is particularly prevalent across Asia, Africa, and parts of Latin America.

In many countries where rabies is endemic, access to post-exposure treatment — including rabies immunoglobulin (RIG) — is extremely limited or unreliable. This makes pre-travel vaccination a critical consideration for many travellers, not merely an optional extra.

Do I Need the Rabies Vaccine?

Rabies pre-exposure vaccination is recommended for:

• Travellers visiting rural or remote areas in Asia, Africa, or Latin America where access to post-exposure treatment is uncertain
• Those planning adventure activities such as cycling, trekking, caving, or camping in rabies-endemic countries
• Travellers on extended stays of more than one month in high-risk countries
• Individuals working with animals, in veterinary roles, or in wildlife conservation abroad
• Children, who are at particular risk because they are more likely to interact with animals and may not report minor bites or scratches

When Should I Get Vaccinated?

The full 3-dose course takes 28 days to complete, so you should ideally begin the course at least 5 weeks before departure to allow a comfortable buffer. If you have limited time before travel, contact us — we can advise on the best approach given your specific timeline and destination.

How Many Doses Do I Need?

The pre-exposure rabies vaccine course consists of 3 injections given on days 0, 7, and 28. All 3 doses are required for full pre-exposure protection. The vaccine must be administered intramuscularly, typically in the upper arm.

If you have previously received a full rabies course, you may need only a booster injection rather than repeating all 3 doses. Bring your vaccination records to your appointment so we can assess your current status.

Side Effects of the Rabies Vaccine

The rabies vaccine is well tolerated by most people. The most common side effects are mild discomfort, redness, or swelling at the injection site. Some people experience a mild headache or fatigue for a day or two after each dose. Serious allergic reactions are very rare. You can continue normal activities immediately after vaccination.
