What Is Chikungunya?
Chikungunya is a viral infection spread by infected mosquitoes, causing sudden fever and often severe joint pain that can persist for weeks. It’s rarely fatal, but the joint pain can be debilitating and, in some cases, long-lasting.
Do I Need the Chikungunya Vaccine?
Vaccination is recommended for travellers to regions where chikungunya is endemic or experiencing outbreaks, including parts of Africa, South and Southeast Asia, and the Americas and Caribbean. Risk is often higher during local rainy seasons.

When Should I Get Vaccinated?
Aim to be vaccinated at least 6–8 weeks before you travel, to allow protection to develop and to leave time to manage any side effects before departure.

A single dose is currently recommended, with no booster required at this time.
Side Effects of the Chikungunya Vaccine
Possible mild side effects include a rash, raised temperature, nausea or muscle aches.
