What Is Chickenpox?
Chickenpox is a highly contagious infection caused by the varicella-zoster virus, usually causing an itchy, blistering rash along with fever and tiredness. It’s often mild in young children, but can be more severe in adults and can cause serious complications during pregnancy or in people with a weakened immune system.
Do I Need the Chickenpox Vaccine?
The chickenpox vaccine is recommended for anyone who hasn’t previously had chickenpox and wants protection — particularly adults travelling somewhere with limited healthcare access, and those in close contact with young children or vulnerable people.

- Parents or carers wanting to avoid catching chickenpox from their children
When Should I Get Vaccinated?
The 2-dose course should be completed well ahead of travel or any planned pregnancy, ideally with at least 4 weeks between doses and your departure date.
How Many Doses Do I Need?
2 doses are required, given at least 4 weeks apart. Once you’ve completed the course, no further boosters are currently recommended.
Side Effects of the Chickenpox Vaccine
Generally well tolerated. Possible side effects include mild fever, tiredness, digestive upset, and occasionally a mild chickenpox-like rash at the injection site.
