What Is an Uncomplicated UTI?
A urinary tract infection (UTI) causes symptoms such as burning or pain when urinating, needing to go more often or urgently, and sometimes cloudy or strong-smelling urine. An "uncomplicated" UTI means there are no other complicating factors such as pregnancy, catheter use, or recurrent infections.
Am I Eligible for NHS Pharmacy First Treatment?
This pathway is for women aged 16-64 with symptoms of an uncomplicated UTI and no red-flag symptoms such as fever, back pain, or blood in the urine. Pregnant women, men, and those with recurrent or complicated UTIs should see their GP instead.
What Happens at My Consultation?
Our pharmacist will discreetly ask about your symptoms and medical history in a private consultation room, and may check a urine sample, to confirm you’re suitable for treatment under the service.
What Treatment Might Be Offered?
Where appropriate, our pharmacist can issue a short course of antibiotics directly under Pharmacy First, along with advice on staying hydrated and easing symptoms while the infection clears.
When Should I See a GP Instead?
If you’re pregnant, have a fever, back or flank pain, blood in your urine, or symptoms that don’t improve within a few days, our pharmacist will refer you to your GP for further assessment.
