What Is Acute Otitis Media?
Acute otitis media is an infection of the middle ear, common in children but seen in adults too. It typically causes ear pain, a feeling of pressure or fullness, some hearing loss, and occasionally fluid discharge if the eardrum has perforated. It’s usually triggered by a cold or other upper respiratory infection.
Am I Eligible for NHS Pharmacy First Treatment?
This pathway is available for patients aged 1 to 17 years. Adults with suspected ear infections should see their GP, as the Pharmacy First ear infection service is specifically for children and young people.
What Happens at My Consultation?
Our pharmacist will ask about symptoms and duration, and examine the ear where appropriate, checking for signs that need referring on rather than treating in the pharmacy.
What Treatment Might Be Offered?
Many ear infections clear up on their own within a few days with pain relief alone. Where clinically appropriate, our pharmacist can issue a short course of antibiotics directly, without a separate GP appointment.
When Should We See a GP Instead?
If your child is under 1, has a high fever, seems very unwell, has recurrent ear infections, or symptoms don’t improve within 3 days, our pharmacist will refer you to your GP for further assessment.
