What Is Diphtheria?

Diphtheria is a bacterial infection that affects the nose and throat, and can cause breathing difficulties, heart problems and nerve damage if untreated. It spreads through respiratory droplets and remains more common in parts of Asia, Africa, Eastern Europe and South America.

Do I Need the Diphtheria Vaccine?

A booster is recommended if you are travelling to a region where diphtheria remains common, or if it has been more than 10 years since your last dose. Your pharmacist will check your vaccination history at your consultation.

When Should I Get Vaccinated?

Ideally at least 2 weeks before you travel, to allow protection to build up.

How Many Doses Do I Need?

If you have been vaccinated before, a single booster dose is usually sufficient. If this is your first vaccination or your history is unclear, you may need a fuller course — we will advise after reviewing your records.

Side Effects of the Diphtheria Vaccine

Side effects are usually mild: soreness at the injection site, or feeling generally unwell for a day or two.

What our patients say

Trusted by the Chiswick community

“I’ve been using Alisha pharmacy for 20 years now. I have other pharmacies nearer to my home, but I always use Alisha because Raj and all the rest of the team there are so friendly, professional, knowledgeable, informative and helpful. They obviously really care about what they do. A local gem.”

— P Hall, Google Review

“Raj the pharmacist runs a service of excellence and care to his local community. He and his team go above and beyond and know their community. The standard has always been exemplary. Would be such a tragedy to lose all of this to something impersonal and generic.”

— Harika Basharan, Google Review
