What Is Pneumococcal Disease?
Pneumococcal disease is caused by Streptococcus pneumoniae bacteria, which can lead to serious infections including pneumonia, sepsis (blood poisoning) and meningitis. It can also cause less severe illnesses such as sinusitis and ear infections. The pneumococcal vaccine protects against the most common strains of the bacteria.
Am I Eligible for the NHS Pneumococcal Vaccine?
The pneumococcal vaccine is offered free on the NHS to specific groups considered at higher risk of serious illness:
- Babies, as part of the routine childhood immunisation programme
- Adults aged 65 and over
- Anyone with a long-term health condition such as chronic heart, lung, liver or kidney disease, or diabetes
- People with a weakened immune system, cochlear implants, or a cerebrospinal fluid leak
- People with sickle cell disease
- Certain welders and metal workers exposed to fumes at work
When Should I Get Vaccinated?
You can have the pneumococcal vaccine at any time if you are in an eligible group. It can be given at the same appointment as your flu vaccine, and protection typically develops within 2 to 3 weeks.
How Many Doses Do I Need?
Most adults only need a single dose for long-lasting protection. Babies are usually given two doses as part of the childhood immunisation schedule.
Side Effects of the Pneumococcal Vaccine
Side effects are usually mild and settle within a few days — swelling or soreness at the injection site, a high temperature, tiredness or a reduced appetite. Babies may seem unsettled or irritable after vaccination.
